Romney was the best possibility of giving McCain a run for his money, IMO. Now, you can be rest assured that McCain will be the GOP nominee.

The GOP don't like him because he doesn't strictly follow the Rush/Ann/Reagan ultra conservative line. They don't like that he tells it like it is and vows to get rid of pork. The don't like it that he plans and starts with a plan that works instead of starting way to the right and battling with the Dems to get it more middle. He is not as conservative on social issues.
I think the radical right feels threatened by him because he could prove to be very powerful - appeals to mainstream GOP (contrary to popular myth, the majority of GOP citizens are moderate GOP not way right fundamentalists) plus the independents and many Dems like him as well. It is sad when we keep talking about uniting and working together and finding common ground, then his own party members start sabotaging that person when he finally shows up.

I like McCain because he's moderate. I consider myself a moderate conservative, but was really starting to get disillusioned with this whole "God wants a Republican in the White House" line of thinking I've seen.
And I think the people are speaking that we don't want a hard-line to the right kind of guy...

That is exactly what I am talking about. The hardliners (who are the vocal ones) don't like him because he threatens their continued dominance of the GOP, while the public is damm tired of the hardliners.
