View Full Version : A Question About Our Defense?

Bill Young said that after Georgia's first drive:
"We made corrections and (OSU defenders) understood what happened, why it happened and what to do to keep it from happening again," and "That's our job as coaches – to get them schooled up."
Does anyone know what this defensive adjustment was? The announcers did not comment on a change and they would have, if they notice it. I did not see any change either. Did we change our pass coverage and keep another person up for run support? Georgia tried passing more after that first drive and the commentators did mention that. What did we change?

The Punisher was quoted as saying the players had to get used to the speed of the game again on the first Dawg drive.
ABC commentators were also doing the "same ole, same ole" about our D during the first Dawg drive. Gotta admit that I was thinking it too, at that time. Glad I had to do a mea culpa later.

CoachOSU could probably answer this better, but from my volunteer coaching days I will say that we would scout teams and notice little things like: OT's blocking assignments, how they lined up for a pass, who took who on a pass rush, routes the receivers were taking, blocking assignments of the backfield, who took on our DE's, etc, etc. And sure enough when we got in the game the other team would have changed something. It is easily visible from above and I would think the information was sent down to coach Young if something like this was noticed.
From there it is just a matter of "schooling" up your defense to be aware that this is happening.

From the SI Article that Verb posted:
Young might have felt like the water was rising fast Saturday when Georgia took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in five minutes for a touchdown, but he didn't show it. After the drive, defensive tackle Shane Jarka would later swear, Young was smiling. "It's just gave a sense of ease," Jarka said. Said Young: "I'm not sure I was smiling. I might have been biting my lip."
When Young opened his mouth, he calmly decreed what adjustments his unit would make when Georgia next got the ball. Linebackers would attack run plays from a slightly different angle. Safeties would support the run better. In the final 54 minutes, the Bulldogs would score three points and gain 177 yards. "Four years ago, everybody would have been in the tank," Gundy said. "I didn't see anybody flinch."

Memphis Poke, you are probably right. I remember Bill Young saying he would be at field level because he could see the Offensive line better. He would try and pick-up some key like if the center was on his toes (I assume that's a running play to fire off the ball) or flat footed (to go into pass protection after the snap). He must have picked up some key on that first drive. Shane Jarka mentioned Young was smiling when they came of the field which probably indicates the same thing.
I love coaches that know what adjustments to make and how to implement them.
