Star Spencer isn’t known for throwing the ball all over the field.

But with their new co-offensive coordinator, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Bobcats flinging it around some.

Former Millwood standout Rashaun Woods, considered the best wide receiver ever to play for Oklahoma State, is an assistant coach with Star Spencer this year.

"When I went to college, I knew that I wanted to be a coach someday,” Woods said. "Before all the touchdowns, before all the practices, I knew if I didn’t wind up playing football for a long time, I wanted to be coaching it.”

Woods has a physical education certification at the school and will serve as the in-school suspension teacher.

"I’ve always seen myself as a guy that can make a difference in young people’s lives,” Woods said. "What better way than if I can help some of the kids who aren’t always doing the right thing?”

Woods is OSU’s all-time leader in receptions (293), receiving yards (4,414) and touchdowns (42).

Having Woods around adds a layer of credibility to Star Spencer’s staff, coach Darrell Hall said. Not that the Bobcats needed it, as they enter the year among the favorites in Class 4A.

"He’s been where all of them want to be,” Hall said. "They want to play Division I football and have a chance to play in the NFL. He’s done that. They can see that in him.

"He’s not a massive guy. He’s a lot like them. He’s from this area and they see if he can do it, they can too if they work hard.”

Woods is one several new coaches on Hall’s staff.

"We’re not going to throw the ball every play or probably even 50-50, but you’ve got to be able to keep them honest,” Woods said. "We could run the ball every play and have a successful year but if we want to be a great team and contend for a title, we’ve got to be able to throw the ball.”

Coming out of Millwood, Woods was a big-time recruit.

His senior year with the Falcons, he had more than 1,100 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns while facing near-constant double teams.

Woods decided to stay close to home and started a family tradition of playing football for the Cowboys. He was followed to Stillwater by brothers D’Juan and Donovan.

Rashaun Woods was a first-round draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2004. After a short NFL career, he returned to Oklahoma City.

Good for him! He'll be a good mentor for HS kids IMO.

I wish we had coaches like that when I went there. My senior year, there was a teacher's strike in the OKC school system and went went into the football season with one coach total.
