It sounds scary. I hope I don't have to have it.

My mom had the same hernia repair three different times...ten years ago. The last time they used a mesh that finally held.
Two weeks ago we find out she has another hernia. It's pretty good sized. You can see it pooching out her tummy. We won't be doing anything about it. She's just wearing a stomach band.

A buddy of mine had it done several years ago. He said he was sore for a long time, but the mesh seemed to work good.

Just came from the doctor who said I am not needing surgery yet but he did mention that it is not always successful; it's very painful; I might have to have it done several times and people have trouble with the scar tissue. Sounds like exactly what all of you are saying. Oh, joy.

Are you talking an umbilical hernia, ventral hernia or a hernia from a previous surgery incision?
I had my umbilical hernia fixed in June. I was a little sore for a week, took just a couple of days of pain meds. They put in a big piece of mesh, 4"x6" or something like that. Seems to be fine. Mine was done open because he wasn't sure how big the defect (hole) was and if it needed mesh or not. Obviously it did. If they know it will need mesh they can do it laproscopically (that doesn't look like it is spelled right but it looks worse when I change it, oh well).

I have an umbilical hernia right now. Didn't remember that Dad had the same thing. It doesn't bother me right now but my problem is I have a bulge in the middle of my stomach when I do crunches. Doctor said it is a weakening of my stomach muscles most likely due to all the weight I have carried for all these years stretching the muscles side to side. He said it could tear or it could do nothing. Right now I'm trying to strengthen my stomach muscles with crunches and some light weight work on my stomach. Course, losing more weight will help too. You all didn't want to hear all this, did you? Sorry.
But good question and I don't want surgery even minor surgery unless it is absolutely necessary.

They SUCK!!! I had an insicional hernia that the first surgen really messed me up bad, with the mesh intwined in my intestins and blatter.Second surgery worked but have horrible scar tissue. Make sure your surgen knows how to do this surgery. The doctor that did my first one was the Cheif of Surgens at the hospital and he really messed me up for life.
