OSU walk-on kicker Bailey given scholarship

So much for any competition in the kicking game for Oklahoma State this season.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy announced after the Cowboys' first day of practice that junior kicker Dan Bailey has been awarded a scholarship for the upcoming season.

Bailey ranked fourth in the Big 12 in field-goal percentage last season, hitting 15 of 19 kicks for 78.9 percent. His longest kick was 45 yards and two of his misses came from 50 yards or beyond. Bailey finished with 110 points last season.

Gundy also announced that running back Bryant Ward also has been awarded a scholarship.

"Both are now on scholarship," Gundy said. "When they walked on we told them if they contributed and took care of their class work we would consider paying for their education. I think since we've been here they are sixth and seventh walk-ons to earn scholarships."

The Cowboys opened practice after a brief rainstorm in the afternoon. The weather change forced the Cowboys to work out on the turf at Boone Pickens Stadium.

"This was one for the record books," senior cornerback Perrish Cox of the oppresive heat.

Gundy was pleased with his team's work, despite the sweltering temperatures.

"It was a good day to practice," Gundy said. "It was probably 125 degrees down there but I think everyone did a good job of getting through it. Players were moving around with a lot of adrenalin flowing. We have 28 more practices and we have to get better, but it was a good start."

applying high volumes of water to cool and rinse the synthetic surface to clean debris, body fluids, animal waste, and dirt from the field prior to play.

Loosely translated body fluids means it will clean up where players who were not in shape Hurled during practice due to the heat.

Yeah the main reason the two were given scholarships is the real bad news. New signees Colton Richardson and Ryan Robinson did not report and are not expected. No reason given for LB Richardson from Ada, but DL Robinson froom GA did not make his grades and is going JUCO. Two defensive recruits we really needed...

the report I heard was that Richardson was on campus but could not yet practice due to some snag with the NCAA clearing house.

don't know how accurate that information is.

So the arrest may not have had anything to do with it? That would be good news, it would be rough to see a kid lose his scholarship over some shake.

Hold on a sec.

Somebody might want to check on this, but I'm almost 100 percent certain that rule used to say a school could offer a walk-on player a scholarship after his second year without it taking away from a school's allotted number of scholarships.

It's just that very few schools choose to do that because the cost of tuition still comes from the athletic department's budget, and given the limited role most walk-ons ever see, it just isn't cost-effective. But, it can be used as a reward (as in this case) for players who have contributed or have made other significant (and probably off-the-field) contributions to the team.

I am all for giving scholarships to guys like these who were promised nothing but a shot, then busted their butts, and made the most of their opportunities. From walk-on to starting kicker of a highly ranked team? And Bryant Ward...a local kid, living the dream. Yeah! It was awesome to see him score a touchdown in one of the early games.

I don't know how far back you're thinking, but that has not been the case since 85 limit rule, and I don't think it was the case prior to that.... how far back are you going? Before that there weren't any scholarship restrictions.

It has been reported as a standing policy since Miles, and continuing under Gundy, that if a kid can work his way into a starting role, then they will reward him with a scholarship; of course, one of the 85 has to open up for them to award it.
