Asked during Monday's Big 12 basketball coaches' teleconference about the possibility that he could return to the Oklahoma State program, Kansas' Bill Self replied, "That's a dead issue."
Self, who played for the Cowboys in 1981-85 and was an OSU assistant in 1986-93, has been the subject of increasing speculation. OSU coach Sean Sutton has three years remaining on his contract. Entering Monday's Bedlam game at Oklahoma, Sutton's two-season record as OSU's head coach was 32-22 overall, 7-14 in Big 12 play.
Last Friday, while being interviewed live during Jim Rome's national radio show, Self was asked about the Oklahoma State possibility. Last week, Sports Illustrated college basketball writer Seth Davis included this in his online column: "Some folks in Stillwater harbor fantasies that they can throw enough money at Bill Self to get him to come home."
On Monday, Self said he is "surprised" by any talk related to OSU.
"If anyone is speculating like that, it's people not in the know at all," said Self, who coached from 1993-97 at Oral Roberts and from 1997-2000 at the University of Tulsa. "Obviously, that's how rumors get started a large part of the time. But there's nothing there and it's not anything that needs to be addressed. Addressing it, all it does is bring attention to it."
Self's undefeated Jayhawks (20-0 and ranked No. 2) play at Kansas State on Wednesday night.
